TradingView Setup Guide

TradingView is the most widely used charting platform in the world.
Its strengths include an intuitive interface, rich indicators, and an active community.

In this document, we'll cover how to set up TradingView for beginners
to a level where you can immediately apply it to trading.


1. Account Creation and Plan Selection

Creating an Account

  1. Visit the TradingView official website
  2. Click "Get started" or "Sign up" in the top right corner
  3. Choose to sign up with email, Google, or Apple account
You can easily sign up with email or social accounts.

Recommendations:

  • Getting started: Basic (Free) is sufficient
  • Serious trading: Plus covers most needs
  • Multi-timeframe analysis: Premium or higher (if you need split screen)

💡 Tip: TradingView often offers 50-60% discounts during Black Friday and year-end.
If you're considering a paid plan, watch for discount seasons.


2. Learning the Basic Interface

When you log into TradingView, you'll see a screen like this:

Main Areas Explained

  1. Symbol Search (top left)

    • Search for stocks/coins
    • Example: BTCUSDT, BINANCE:BTCUSDT
  2. Timeframe Selection

    • 1 minute (1), 5 minutes (5), 15 minutes (15), 1 hour (1H), 4 hours (4H), daily (1D), etc.
    • Frequently used timeframes can be added to favorites
  3. Chart Tools (left sidebar)

    • Drawing tools like trendlines, Fibonacci, text
  4. Indicators Button

    • Add technical indicators like moving averages, RSI, MACD
  5. Settings (gear icon top right)

    • Detailed settings for chart style, colors, scale

3. Basic Chart Settings

Enable Dark Mode

Staring at charts for long periods strains your eyes. Turn on dark mode.

  1. Right-click on chart → "Settings" or click the gear icon
  2. Select the "Appearance" tab
  3. Choose "Dark" under "Theme"
Change the theme to dark in the Appearance tab.

Candle Color Settings

If you don't like the default colors, you can change them.

  1. Chart settings → "Symbol" tab
  2. Set "Body", "Border", "Wick" colors individually
  3. Generally:
    • Up: Green or Red (varies by culture)
    • Down: Red or Blue

The global standard is Up=Green, Down=Red.
Set it to whatever is comfortable for you.

Scale Settings

  1. Chart settings → "Scale" tab
  2. Check "Auto" (auto-adjusts to price)
  3. "Log scale": Useful for long-term charts (large price movements)

4. Timeframe Favorites

Adding frequently used timeframes to favorites makes switching faster.

  1. Click the arrow next to the timeframe button
  2. Click the star (☆) on your desired timeframes
  3. Recommended combination: 15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, daily

5. Adding Indicators

How to Add Indicators

  1. Click the "Indicators" button at the top (or shortcut /)
  2. Type the indicator you want in the search box
  3. Click to add it to the chart
Click the Indicators button and search to add.

Start with just these:

  1. Moving Average (MA)

    • Search: "Moving Average" or "MA"
    • Recommended settings: 20 EMA, 50 SMA, 200 SMA
  2. Volume

    • Search: "Volume"
    • Displayed at the bottom of the chart by default
  3. RSI (optional)

    • Search: "RSI" or "Relative Strength Index"
    • Use the default setting of 14

Changing Indicator Settings

  1. Click the indicator name on the chart
  2. Click the gear icon
  3. Modify period etc. in the "Inputs" tab
  4. Modify color, thickness in the "Style" tab
Click the indicator name to change settings.

6. Using Drawing Tools

Drawing Trendlines

  1. Select "Trend Line" from the left toolbar (or shortcut Alt+T)
  2. Click starting point → Click ending point
  3. Double-click to confirm

Drawing Horizontal Lines

  1. Select "Horizontal Line" from the left toolbar (or shortcut Alt+H)
  2. Click at the desired price level

Fibonacci Retracement

  1. Select "Fibonacci Retracement" from the left toolbar
  2. Drag from low to high (or vice versa)
You can draw trendlines, horizontal lines, Fibonacci, and more on the chart.

7. Setting Up Alerts

One of TradingView's powerful features is Alerts.

Setting Price Alerts

  1. Right-click on the desired price level on the chart
  2. Select "Add Alert"
  3. Set conditions:
    • "Crossing"
    • "Crossing Up", etc.
  4. Choose alert method:
    • App push, email, popup, etc.
You can receive alerts when reaching specific prices.

Indicator-Based Alerts

You can also set alerts like "notify when RSI drops below 30".

  1. Add Alert → Select indicator in condition
  2. Set something like "RSI crosses below 30"

⚠️ Note: Free plan has a limit of 5 alerts.
Only set important alerts.


8. Saving Layouts

Once you've finished setting up, make sure to save your layout.

  1. Top menu → "Layout" dropdown
  2. Click "Save Layout"
  3. Enter a name (e.g., "BTC Basic Analysis")
Saving your layout allows you to restore it anytime.

Using Multiple Layouts

  • For basic analysis: Moving averages + Volume
  • For day trading: RSI + Bollinger Bands + short timeframes
  • For long-term analysis: Weekly chart + 200 SMA + Fibonacci

Switching layouts based on the situation is efficient.

10. Using the Mobile App

TradingView also offers a mobile app.

  • iOS: Search "TradingView" on the App Store
  • Android: Search "TradingView" on the Play Store

Layouts and alerts set on PC sync automatically.
You can receive alerts and check charts while you're out.
